Objective: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to discuss the key components of an effective leader and understand the importance of effective communication in successful leadership.

Time: 45 minutes

Materials: Handouts, whiteboard/chalkboard/markers, PowerPoint presentation

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes): Discuss importance of leadership and the key characteristics of an effective leader (5 minutes). Present example of a successful leader and discuss the qualities that made him/her successful (5 minutes).

  2. Activity (20 minutes): Pass out handouts. Divide class into groups of 4 to 6 people. Ask students to read and discuss the list of characteristics of an effective leader listed on the handout. Have each group brainstorm 3-5 additional qualities based on their reading and discussion and record on handout.

  3. Discussion (15 minutes): Divide whiteboard/chalkboard into two groups, labelling one “Qualities” and one “Communication Skills”. Ask each group to share the qualities and communication skills they discussed based on the handout. As a class, discuss each point and note similarities and differences in opinion.

Conclusion: Summarize the key components of an effective leader and the importance of communication in successful leadership. Remind students how these components can be used to effectively lead in the real world.

Assessment: Ask students to write a short essay outlining the key components to successful leadership and how they can be used in the real world.
