Lesson Plan: Christmas History and Vocabulary

Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Objective: To learn about the history and vocabulary of Christmas.

Materials: - Whiteboard and markers - Handouts with vocabulary list - Video: “The History of Christmas” by History Channel - Worksheet: “Christmas Vocabulary” by EnglishClub.com - Ice-breaking game: “Christmas Charades”

Procedure:

  1. Warm-up/Ice-breaking game (10 minutes) - Introduce the game “Christmas Charades” and explain the rules. - Divide the class into two teams. - Each team takes turns choosing a Christmas-related word or phrase and acting it out without speaking. - The other team has to guess the word or phrase within a certain time limit. - The team with the most correct guesses wins.

  2. Vocabulary (10 minutes) - Hand out the vocabulary list and go through the words with the class. - Ask the students to repeat the words after you and provide examples of how to use them in a sentence. - Encourage the students to ask questions if they are unsure of any of the words.

  3. Video (20 minutes) - Show the video “The History of Christmas” by History Channel. - Ask the students to take notes on the key points of the video. - After the video, ask the students to share what they learned and discuss any questions they may have.

  4. Worksheet (15 minutes) - Hand out the worksheet “Christmas Vocabulary” by EnglishClub.com. - Ask the students to complete the worksheet individually or in pairs. - Go through the answers as a class and clarify any misunderstandings.

  5. Wrap-up (5 minutes) - Ask the students to share one thing they learned about the history or vocabulary of Christmas. - Thank the students for their participation and encourage them to continue practicing their English.
