Title: Reviewing Narrative Tenses for Adult English Learners

Objective: To review the narrative tenses (past simple, continuous, and perfect) and their usage in storytelling.

Materials: - Whiteboard and markers - Handouts with examples of narrative tenses - Short stories or anecdotes for practice

Procedure:

  1. Warm-up (5 minutes) - Greet the students and ask them to share a short story or anecdote from their own lives using the past tense. - Write some of the verbs they used on the board and ask them to identify which tense they belong to.

  2. Introduction (10 minutes) - Explain that in English, there are different tenses used to tell stories or describe events that happened in the past. - Write the three narrative tenses on the board: past simple, past continuous, and past perfect. - Give examples of each tense and their usage in storytelling.

  3. Practice (30 minutes) - Hand out the examples of narrative tenses and ask the students to identify which tense is used in each sentence. - Divide the class into pairs and give them short stories or anecdotes to read and discuss. Ask them to identify the narrative tenses used in the story and explain why they were used. - Have the pairs share their findings with the class.

  4. Production (15 minutes) - Ask the students to write a short story or anecdote using all three narrative tenses. - Have them share their stories with the class and provide feedback on their usage of the tenses.

  5. Wrap-up (5 minutes) - Summarize the lesson and ask the students to reflect on what they learned. - Encourage them to practice using narrative tenses in their daily conversations and writing.

Assessment: - Observe the students’ participation in the activities and their ability to identify and use the narrative tenses correctly. - Provide feedback on their written stories and offer suggestions for improvement.
