Objective: To introduce students to the book of Genesis and to provide a basic overview of the first thirty-one verses in the book.

Materials: - Bibles with the book of Genesis - Overhead projector - Printed materials summarizing the key points of the first thirty-one verses

Class Time: 45 minutes

Warm Up: (5 minutes) Begin by having the students introduce themselves, including why they are in the class.

Discussion: (15 minutes) Introduce the book of Genesis, providing an overview of the themes, characters, and settings. Ask the students to consider how the book relates to their own beliefs and experiences.

Pass out Bibles to the students and have them turned to the first chapter of Genesis. Ask the students to read the first verses out loud to help them they become familiar with the basic structure of a biblical narrative.

Direct the students to look for very specific events and themes in the first chapter of Genesis. Divide the students into small groups and have them discuss the key points.

When the students have finished, have them report back their findings to the entire class.

Review and Summary: (15 minutes) Using the overhead projector, show a summary of the key events, themes, and characters from the first thirty-one verses. Ask the students to suggest other insights from their reading of Genesis.

Answer any questions the students may have about the book of Genesis.

Assessment: (10 minutes) Have the students complete a quiz on the material covered during the lesson.

Conclusion and Homework: (5 minutes) Discuss any remaining questions. Remind the students to study the book of Genesis further in their own time and direct them to any other resources they can use.

Homework: Have the students read the next few verses in the book of Genesis as a homework assignment.
