Introduction Welcome the students to the lesson and discuss what they already know about the novel by John Steinbeck. Introduce the goal of the lesson and how it will help them to understand the themes and characters in the novel.

Lesson Outline

The teacher will open up the lesson by reading chapter 1 of Of Mice and Men aloud to the class. After the reading, the class will focus on the setting of the novel. The teacher will also ask comprehension questions to ensure the students understand the text.

After discussion, the teacher will assign worksheets and/or activities that allow the students to practice close analyzation of the text and answer relevant questions about the setting, characters and themes. The teacher will be on hand to answer questions, assist with comprehension and facilitate group discussions.

Questioning: - Describe the setting in Chapter 1 - Who are the main characters in Chapter 1? - What is the time period and place of Chapter 1? - What themes are evident in Chapter 1?

Assessment

The class will work together to answer the following questions, as well as practice close analysis of the text;

• Why is the setting important to the novel?
• How does Steinbeck use the setting to create feelings and meaning?
• Why does the setting of the novel create a unique mood and tone?

Differentiation

The teacher will ensure group discussions are equitable, listening and speaking skills are focused on. The teacher will also offer additional resources and activities for students who need more assistance to ensure the lesson is effective.

Plenary

The teacher will wrap up the lesson by guiding students in writing a short summary of Chapter 1. The teacher will also provide an opportunity to reflect on what they have learned and ask students to share their understanding with the class.
