Introduction:

Today, we will be exploring the way Steinbeck uses characterization to introduce his two main characters in the opening chapter of his classic novella, Of Mice and Men. We will examine how Steinbeck introduces the behavior, physical appearance, dialogue and interactions between George and Lennie.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Teacher introduces the text Of Mice and Men and gives a brief overview of the setting and narrative (5 minutes)
  2. Teacher demonstrates a contextual analysis of chapter 1 and explains the technique of characterization (5 minutes)
  3. Students complete a close reading of the text with teacher guidance (15 minutes)
  4. Students work in groups to explore the themes of friendship and disability (15 minutes)
  5. Teacher facilitates a class discussion by using questioning to assess student understanding (20 minutes)

Questioning:

  1. Who are the two main characters in chapter 1 of Of Mice and Men?
  2. What is the physical description of Lennie?
  3. What are Lennie’s strengths and limitations?
  4. How does George talk to Lennie?
  5. What is the relationship between George and Lennie?
  6. What can we learn about George’s character from his interactions with Lennie?

Assessment:

At the conclusion of the lesson, students should demonstrate their understanding of the technique of characterization through a written response which examines how George and Lennie are introduced in chapter 1 and the implications of their relationship.

Differentiated Learning:

For those students who require additional support, the teacher should provide simplified worksheets and visual resources to support their close reading of chapter 1.

Plenary:

At the end of the lesson, the teacher will lead a class discussion to review the key themes and techniques discussed throughout the lesson.
