Lesson Plan: Funny Bunny and the Journey of Seeds to Plants
Grade: 2 Chapter: Funny Bunny
Theme: Seeds to Plants
Objective: Students will understand the process of how seeds grow into plants by reading the chapter “Funny Bunny” and engaging in hands-on activities.
Materials: - Copy of the chapter “Funny Bunny” for each student - Chart paper and markers - Seeds (e.g., bean, sunflower, or any fast-growing seeds) - Soil - Small pots or cups - Watering cans or spray bottles - Magnifying glasses - Drawing paper and coloring materials
Procedure:
-
Introduction (10 minutes): a. Begin the lesson by asking students if they know how plants grow from seeds. b. Discuss the importance of seeds in the life cycle of plants. c. Introduce the chapter “Funny Bunny” and explain that it will help them understand the journey of seeds to plants.
- Reading and Discussion (15 minutes):
a. Distribute a copy of the chapter “Funny Bunny” to each student.
b. Read the chapter aloud or have students take turns reading.
c. Pause at key points to ask comprehension questions and encourage discussion:
- What did Funny Bunny find in the garden?
- How did Funny Bunny take care of the seeds?
- What happened to the seeds after Funny Bunny planted them?
- How did Funny Bunny feel when the plants grew?
-
Charting the Journey (10 minutes): a. Draw a large chart on the chart paper with the headings: Seed, Planting, Growth, and Result. b. Ask students to recall the different stages of the seed’s journey from the chapter. c. Write their responses under the appropriate headings on the chart. d. Discuss each stage and emphasize the importance of sunlight, water, and soil for plant growth.
-
Hands-on Activity: Planting Seeds (20 minutes): a. Divide students into small groups. b. Provide each group with seeds, small pots or cups, soil, and watering cans or spray bottles. c. Instruct students to fill their pots with soil, plant the seeds, and water them. d. Encourage students to observe and record any changes they notice over time. e. Remind them to provide sunlight and water regularly.
-
Observation and Documentation (15 minutes): a. Give each student a magnifying glass and encourage them to observe their planted seeds. b. Ask students to draw and label the different stages of seed growth they observe. c. Provide coloring materials for students to color their drawings. d. Allow students to share their observations and drawings with the class.
- Conclusion (5 minutes): a. Recap the key points discussed in the chapter and during the hands-on activity. b. Emphasize the importance of taking care of seeds and providing them with the necessary conditions for growth. c. Encourage students to continue observing their planted seeds at home and share their findings with their families.
Assessment: - Observe students’ participation and engagement during the discussion and hands-on activity. - Review students’ drawings and labels to assess their understanding of the seed-to-plant journey. - Ask students open-ended questions to assess their comprehension of the chapter and the theme.
Extension Activities: - Have students research and present information about different types of seeds and their growth requirements. - Create a class garden where students can plant various seeds and observe their growth throughout the year. - Read other books or stories related to seeds and plants, such as “The Tiny Seed” by Eric Carle or “From Seed to Plant” by Gail Gibbons.
