Lesson Plan: Exploring 3D Shapes

Subject: Mathematics Grade Level: Early Years (3-5 years old) Duration: 45 minutes

Introduction: - Begin the lesson by gathering the children in a circle and show them a variety of 3D shapes (cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, pyramid). - Ask the children if they have seen these shapes before and if they can name any of them. - Explain that today, they will be learning more about these shapes and how to identify and describe them.

Lesson Outline: 1. Learning Objective: - To identify and describe 3D shapes. - To understand the properties of different 3D shapes.

  1. Engage:
    • Show a short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cg-Uc556-Q) that introduces 3D shapes in a fun and interactive way.
    • Encourage the children to participate by pointing out the shapes they recognize.
  2. Explore:
    • Provide each child with a 3D shape manipulative (e.g., wooden blocks, plastic shapes).
    • Allow the children to explore the shapes by touching, feeling, and examining them.
    • Encourage them to describe the shapes using words like “sides,” “corners,” “edges,” and “faces.”
  3. Questioning:
    • Ask the children questions to promote critical thinking and understanding:
      • How many faces does a cube have?
      • Can you find a shape that rolls?
      • Which shape has a pointy top?
      • Can you find a shape that has no corners?
  4. Assessment:
    • Distribute a worksheet (https://www.twinkl.com/resource/t-n-2546440-3d-shapes-activity-sheet) with pictures of different 3D shapes.
    • Ask the children to color each shape and write its name underneath.
    • Walk around the classroom to observe and provide assistance as needed.
  5. Differentiation:
    • For children who need additional support, provide a worksheet with fewer shapes or use concrete objects to help them identify and describe the shapes.
    • For children who are more advanced, challenge them to identify real-life objects that resemble the 3D shapes they have learned.
  6. Plenary:
    • Gather the children back in a circle and review what they have learned.
    • Show a short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cg-Uc556-Q) that recaps the 3D shapes and their properties.
    • Ask the children to share one thing they have learned about 3D shapes.
