Lesson Plan: Passive Voice (CEFR Level C2)

Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand and use the passive voice in various tenses.

Materials: - Whiteboard and markers - Handout: Passive Voice Worksheet - Video: “Introduction to Passive Voice” (available on YouTube)

Warm-up (5 minutes): 1. Greet the students and engage in a brief conversation to create a positive and relaxed atmosphere. 2. Ask the students if they are familiar with the concept of passive voice. Elicit some examples from them.

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Write the following sentence on the board: “The cat chased the mouse.” 2. Ask the students to identify the subject and the object in the sentence. 3. Explain that in the active voice, the subject performs the action, while in the passive voice, the subject receives the action. 4. Write the passive voice version of the sentence on the board: “The mouse was chased by the cat.” 5. Highlight the changes made in the sentence and explain the structure of the passive voice.

Main Activity - Worksheet (20 minutes): 1. Distribute the Passive Voice Worksheet to the students. 2. Instruct them to complete the sentences using the passive voice. 3. Monitor the students as they work on the worksheet, providing assistance and answering any questions they may have. 4. After they finish, review the answers as a class, discussing any common errors or misconceptions.

Video Activity (15 minutes): 1. Introduce the video “Introduction to Passive Voice” and explain that it will provide further examples and explanations. 2. Play the video, ensuring that the students can see and hear it clearly. 3. After watching the video, ask the students to share any new information or insights they gained. 4. Discuss any questions or doubts that may have arisen from the video.

Practice Activity (15 minutes): 1. Divide the students into pairs or small groups. 2. Provide each group with a set of sentence cards, some written in active voice and others in passive voice. 3. Instruct the students to match the active and passive voice versions of the sentences. 4. Monitor the groups as they work, offering guidance and feedback. 5. Have each group share their answers and discuss any discrepancies or difficulties they encountered.

Wrap-up (5 minutes): 1. Recap the main points covered in the lesson, emphasizing the structure and usage of the passive voice. 2. Encourage the students to practice using the passive voice in their speaking and writing. 3. Answer any final questions or concerns the students may have.

Note: The video “Introduction to Passive Voice” can be selected based on the teacher’s preference or availability. It should be a short video (around 5 minutes) that provides clear explanations and examples of the passive voice.
