Grade 1 Hygiene and Nutrition Lesson Plan: Sources of Food

Subject: Hygiene and Nutrition

Grade Level: 1

Duration: 45 minutes

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Identify different sources of food.
  2. Understand the importance of eating a variety of foods.
  3. Explain the benefits of eating healthy foods.

Materials:

  1. Pictures of different sources of food (e.g. fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, meat, etc.)
  2. Chart paper and markers
  3. Handouts with pictures of different foods
  4. Whiteboard and markers

Procedure:

Introduction (5 minutes):

  1. Greet the students and introduce the topic of the lesson: sources of food.
  2. Ask the students if they know where their food comes from and what types of food they eat.
  3. Explain that in this lesson, they will learn about different sources of food and why it is important to eat a variety of foods.

Body (30 minutes):

  1. Show pictures of different sources of food and ask the students to identify them.
  2. Write the names of the different sources of food on the chart paper.
  3. Explain each source of food and its benefits. For example:
  • Fruits and vegetables: provide vitamins and minerals that help keep our bodies healthy.
  • Grains: provide energy and fiber that help us feel full and keep our digestive system healthy.
  • Dairy: provide calcium and other nutrients that help build strong bones and teeth.
  • Meat and protein: provide protein that helps build and repair our muscles and tissues.
  1. Give each student a handout with pictures of different foods and ask them to sort the foods into the different sources of food categories.
  2. Discuss the importance of eating a variety of foods from each category to ensure that our bodies get all the nutrients they need.

Conclusion (10 minutes):

  1. Review the different sources of food and their benefits.
  2. Ask the students to share one new thing they learned about sources of food.
  3. Emphasize the importance of eating a variety of healthy foods to stay healthy and strong.

Assessment:

  1. Observe students during the sorting activity to ensure they are correctly identifying the different sources of food.
  2. Ask students to draw a picture of a healthy meal that includes foods from each of the different sources of food categories.
