Grade 1 Hygiene and Nutrition Lesson Plan: Sources of Food
Objective: Students will be able to identify different sources of food and understand the importance of a balanced diet.
Materials: - Pictures of different sources of food (e.g. fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, meat) - Whiteboard and markers - Handouts with food pyramid and blank spaces for students to fill in - Snacks for demonstration (e.g. apple, carrot, cheese, bread)
Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin by asking students what they had for breakfast that morning. Ask them to name the different foods they ate. 2. Write down their answers on the whiteboard and ask them if they know where those foods come from. 3. Introduce the topic of sources of food and explain that food comes from different places such as plants and animals.
Body (30 minutes): 1. Show pictures of different sources of food and ask students to identify them. Discuss where each food comes from (e.g. apples come from trees, carrots come from the ground). 2. Introduce the food pyramid and explain that it shows the different food groups and how much of each we should eat. 3. Hand out the handouts with the food pyramid and blank spaces for students to fill in. Have them fill in the different food groups with examples of foods they know. 4. Demonstrate how to make a balanced snack by using the snacks provided. For example, make a snack with an apple (fruit), carrot (vegetable), cheese (dairy), and bread (grains). 5. Discuss the importance of a balanced diet and how it helps us stay healthy.
Conclusion (10 minutes): 1. Review the different sources of food and the food pyramid. 2. Ask students to share one thing they learned about sources of food and why it’s important to eat a balanced diet. 3. End the lesson by reminding students to make healthy food choices and to try new foods from different sources.
Assessment: Observe students during the lesson and check their handouts to ensure they have correctly identified the different food groups. Ask questions during the conclusion to assess their understanding of the importance of a balanced diet.
