Grade 1 Lesson Plan: Sorting Sets of Data

Introduction: - Begin the lesson by asking the students if they know what sorting means. - Explain that sorting is when we organize things or people based on certain characteristics or attributes. - Tell the students that today, they will be learning how to sort sets of data about people or things according to one attribute.

Lesson Outline: 1. Introduction (5 minutes) 2. Questioning and Discussion (10 minutes) 3. Sorting Activity (15 minutes) 4. Assessment and Differentiation (10 minutes) 5. Conclusion and Wrap-up (5 minutes)

Questioning: - Ask the students what attributes or characteristics they can think of that we can use to sort things or people. - Encourage them to think of attributes such as color, size, shape, or type. - Discuss with the students why it is important to sort things or people.

Assessment: - Before moving on to the sorting activity, assess the students’ prior knowledge by asking them to give examples of how they can sort objects or people. - Use their responses to guide the rest of the lesson and differentiate instruction accordingly.

Sorting Activity: - Provide each student with a set of objects or pictures of people. - Explain the attribute that they will be sorting by (e.g., color, size, shape). - Model the sorting process by sorting a few objects or pictures in front of the class. - Allow the students to sort their own sets of objects or pictures according to the given attribute. - Circulate around the classroom to provide support and guidance as needed.

Duration: 45 minutes

Activities: - Sorting Objects: Provide the students with a set of objects (e.g., blocks, toys, buttons) and ask them to sort them based on one attribute (e.g., color, size, shape). - Sorting Pictures: Give the students a set of pictures of people and ask them to sort them based on one attribute (e.g., hair color, clothing color, gender).

Learning Goals: - Understand the concept of sorting and its importance. - Identify and describe different attributes or characteristics that can be used for sorting. - Sort sets of data about people or things according to one attribute.

Success Criteria: - Students will be able to identify and describe at least one attribute for sorting. - Students will be able to sort a set of objects or pictures based on one attribute correctly.

Differentiation: - For students who need extra support, provide them with fewer objects or pictures to sort. - For students who need a challenge, ask them to sort objects or pictures based on multiple attributes.

Assessment for Learning: - Observe and assess the students’ ability to sort objects or pictures correctly. - Provide immediate feedback and guidance during the sorting activity. - Use questioning techniques to check for understanding and address any misconceptions.
