Lesson Plan: Will Power Grade 10

Objective: Students will be able to identify and understand what will power is and how it can be used in decision making.

Materials Needed: Paper, pencils, white boards, markers

Introduction (5 minutes): Begin the lesson by asking the students to list the words that come to mind when they hear the word “willpower.” Next, explain the definition of willpower and how it can be used to make decisions based on one’s desires and values, rather than outside factors. Additionally, explain that many successful people rely on will power to reach their goals.

Activity 1 (15 minutes): Ask the students to think of a goal that they feel passionate about accomplishing. Once they have identified their goal, ask them to list out five steps that they need to take in order to accomplish the goal. Once that is completed, ask the students to write out a motivating statement that will help them stay on track with their goal.

Activity 2 (15 minutes): Ask the students to volunteer to share their goal, steps, and motivating statement with the group. After each student shares, have them complete a worksheet featuring different scenarios in which their willpower can be challenged. Follow up by having the students discuss ways to make sure their goals stay on track.

Conclusion (10 minutes): Ask the students if they have any other questions or comments about willpower. Finally, have the students create a goal sheet that they can use over the next few weeks to track their progress towards their goal. This can be displayed on their bulletin board or desk.

Assessment: The students’ goal sheet will be used as the assessment tool.

Examples:

Willpower Example 1: A student has a goal of graduating high school with a 4.0 GPA. They create five steps toward this goal: setting aside daily study time, joining an online tutoring service, studying in groups, relying on teacher resources, and setting reminders in their phone. They create a motivating statement such as “I will be successful in achieving my goal of graduating high school with a 4.0 GPA if I stay organized and put in the hard work.”

Willpower Example 2: A student has the goal of running a 5k race. They create five steps towards this goal: Buy new running shoes, create a training schedule, join a running club, set reminders on their phone to encourage them to exercise, and talk to their friends about motivation. They create a motivating statement such as “I can reach my goal of running a 5k race if I stay dedicated, focused and challenge myself.”
