Lesson Title: Exploring the Interconnection of the 7 Sacred Teachings

Curriculum Objectives: 1. Analyze the significance of Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in shaping Canadian society. 2. Investigate the interconnections between Indigenous cultures and the environment. 3. Recognize the importance of reconciliation and understanding in building a just and inclusive society.

Duration: 2 class periods (90 minutes each)

Materials: 1. Chart paper and markers 2. Seven Sacred Teachings posters or handouts 3. Video clips or images related to Indigenous cultures and teachings 4. Internet access for research

Lesson Procedure:

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking students to brainstorm what they know about Indigenous cultures and teachings. 2. Write their responses on the chart paper and discuss briefly.

Activity 1: Understanding the 7 Sacred Teachings (30 minutes): 1. Introduce the concept of the 7 Sacred Teachings, which are foundational principles in many Indigenous cultures. 2. Display the Seven Sacred Teachings posters or handouts and briefly explain each teaching: Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility, and Truth. 3. Engage students in a class discussion about the meanings and importance of each teaching. 4. Show video clips or images related to Indigenous cultures and teachings to provide visual examples.

Activity 2: Interconnection of the 7 Sacred Teachings (40 minutes): 1. Divide the class into seven groups, assigning each group one of the Sacred Teachings. 2. In their groups, students will research and discuss how their assigned teaching is interconnected with the other teachings. 3. Each group will create a visual representation (poster, diagram, or infographic) illustrating the interconnections between their assigned teaching and the other six teachings. 4. Allow time for each group to present their visual representation to the class, explaining the connections they have identified.

Activity 3: Reflection and Application (30 minutes): 1. Lead a class discussion on the importance of recognizing and embracing the interconnection of the 7 Sacred Teachings in our daily lives. 2. Ask students to reflect individually on how they can apply these teachings in their own lives and in building a just and inclusive society. 3. Provide time for students to share their reflections with a partner or in small groups. 4. Conclude the lesson by emphasizing the significance of reconciliation and understanding in fostering positive relationships and creating a harmonious society.

Assessment: 1. Observe students’ participation and engagement during class discussions and activities. 2. Evaluate the visual representations created by each group, assessing their understanding of the interconnections between the 7 Sacred Teachings. 3. Review students’ individual reflections on the application of the teachings in their lives and their understanding of the importance of reconciliation and understanding.

Extension Activities: 1. Invite an Indigenous guest speaker to share their personal experiences and insights related to the 7 Sacred Teachings. 2. Organize a field trip to a local Indigenous cultural center or museum to further explore Indigenous cultures and teachings. 3. Encourage students to create artwork, poems, or stories inspired by the 7 Sacred Teachings and display them in the classroom or school.
