Grade 3 Lesson Plan: Measuring Capacity in Litres

Subject: Mathematics Topic: Measuring Capacity in Litres Grade Level: 3rd Grade Duration: 45 minutes

Objectives: 1. Students will understand the concept of capacity and its measurement in litres. 2. Students will be able to estimate and measure the capacity of various containers using litres. 3. Students will be able to convert between different units of capacity (e.g., millilitres to litres).

Materials: - Various containers of different sizes (e.g., cups, bottles, jugs) - Measuring cups (1L, 500mL, 250mL, etc.) - Water or any other liquid - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Worksheets (links provided below) - Video resources (links provided below)

Introduction (5 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what capacity means. Write their responses on the board. 2. Explain that capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold. 3. Show different containers and ask students to estimate how much liquid each container can hold. 4. Introduce the unit of measurement for capacity, which is litres. Explain that litres are used to measure larger amounts of liquid.

Lesson Outline: 1. Measuring Capacity in Litres (15 minutes): a. Show a 1L measuring cup and explain that it holds 1 litre of liquid. b. Demonstrate how to measure and pour 1L of water into different containers. c. Ask students to estimate and measure the capacity of various containers using the 1L measuring cup. d. Discuss the results as a class and record the measurements on the board.

  1. Converting Units of Capacity (10 minutes): a. Introduce the concept of converting units of capacity. b. Show a 1L measuring cup and explain that it is equal to 1000 millilitres (mL). c. Demonstrate how to convert millilitres to litres and vice versa using the measuring cup. d. Provide examples and ask students to practice converting units of capacity on the board.

  2. Questioning and Assessment (10 minutes): a. Ask students questions related to measuring capacity in litres, such as:

    • How many millilitres are in 1 litre?
    • How can you convert millilitres to litres?
    • Estimate the capacity of a 500mL bottle. b. Observe students’ responses and provide feedback accordingly.

Differentiation: 1. For students who need additional support, provide visual aids (e.g., pictures of containers) to help them estimate and measure capacity. 2. For students who need a challenge, ask them to estimate and measure the capacity of irregularly shaped containers.

Plenary (5 minutes): 1. Review the key concepts covered in the lesson. 2. Ask students to share one thing they learned about measuring capacity in litres. 3. Summarize the lesson and encourage students to practice measuring capacity in their daily lives.
