Procedure:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes):
    • Begin the lesson by discussing the importance of interviews in journalism.
    • Explain that interviews help journalists gather information, gain different perspectives, and present accurate stories.
    • Show examples of interviews from news articles or videos, highlighting the key features such as questions, responses, and follow-up questions.
    • Discuss the purpose of interviews and how they contribute to a well-rounded news story.
  2. Identifying Key Features (15 minutes):
    • On the whiteboard or chart paper, create a list of key features of a journalistic interview as a class.
    • Guide the students to identify features such as open-ended questions, follow-up questions, active listening, accurate note-taking, and respectful behavior.
    • Discuss the importance of active listening and respectful behavior during an interview.
  3. Interview Questions (10 minutes):
    • Distribute the interview questions worksheet to each student.
    • Explain that they will be conducting an interview with a family member.
    • Instruct students to write down at least five open-ended questions they would like to ask their family member during the interview.
    • Encourage students to think about topics that are interesting and relevant to their family member’s experiences or expertise.
  4. Conducting the Interview (20 minutes):
    • Allow students time to conduct their interviews with their family members.
    • Remind them to use the key features discussed earlier, such as active listening and respectful behavior.
    • Encourage students to take notes during the interview to help them remember important details.
  5. Creating the Video (20 minutes):
    • Provide laptops or tablets to students for recording their interviews.
    • Instruct students to record their interviews, ensuring that they capture both the questions and responses.
    • Remind students to speak clearly and maintain eye contact with their family member during the interview.
    • Assist students in editing their videos if necessary.
  6. Sharing and Reflection (10 minutes):
    • Allow students to share their videos with the class.
    • After each video, facilitate a brief discussion on what went well and what could be improved in terms of the key features of a journalistic interview.
    • Encourage students to provide constructive feedback to their peers.
    • Conclude the lesson by summarizing the importance of interviews in journalism and how they contribute to accurate reporting.

Assessment: - Assess students’ understanding of the key features of a journalistic interview through class discussions and their written interview questions. - Evaluate students’ video interviews using a rubric that assesses their use of open-ended questions, active listening, respectful behavior, and overall presentation skills.
