Learning Targets: 1. Understand the concept of explanatory writing. 2. Identify the important elements of explanatory writing. 3. Demonstrate the ability to write an explanatory text.

Materials: - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Handouts with sample explanatory texts - Writing paper - Pencils

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes) a. Greet the students and explain the purpose of the lesson. b. Ask the students if they are familiar with explanatory writing and discuss their prior knowledge. c. Share the learning targets for the lesson.

  2. Definition and Explanation (10 minutes) a. Write the term “explanatory writing” on the board and ask students to define it. b. Explain that explanatory writing is a type of writing that aims to inform or explain a topic or concept to the reader. c. Discuss the importance of explanatory writing in everyday life, such as in textbooks, articles, and manuals.

  3. Elements of Explanatory Writing (15 minutes) a. Introduce the important elements of explanatory writing: introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. b. Discuss the purpose of each element:
    • Introduction: grabs the reader’s attention and provides background information.
    • Body paragraphs: present clear and organized explanations with supporting details.
    • Conclusion: summarizes the main points and leaves a lasting impression on the reader. c. Provide examples of each element using sample explanatory texts. d. Engage students in a brief discussion about the examples and ask them to identify the elements.
  4. Writing an Explanatory Text (15 minutes) a. Distribute writing paper and pencils to each student. b. Explain that they will be writing an explanatory text on a given topic. c. Provide a prompt or topic for the students to write about (e.g., “Explain the process of photosynthesis”). d. Guide students through the writing process:
    • Brainstorm ideas and create an outline.
    • Write an engaging introduction.
    • Develop body paragraphs with clear explanations and supporting details.
    • Write a concluding paragraph that summarizes the main points. e. Encourage students to refer back to the elements of explanatory writing discussed earlier. f. Allow time for students to write their explanatory texts.
  5. Conclusion (5 minutes) a. Ask a few students to share their explanatory texts with the class. b. Provide positive feedback and highlight the effective use of the elements of explanatory writing. c. Summarize the main points of the lesson and remind students of the learning targets. d. Answer any questions and provide additional clarification if needed.

Note: The time allocation for each section is approximate and can be adjusted based on the pace and needs of the students.
