Grade: 6 Subject: English Language Arts Topic: Descriptive Writing

Learning Targets: 1. Students will be able to identify and use descriptive language to enhance their writing. 2. Students will be able to effectively incorporate sensory details into their descriptive writing. 3. Students will be able to organize their ideas and thoughts in a logical manner.

Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.3 - Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.5 - With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.

Warm-up Activity (5 minutes): - Display a picture or show a short video clip that evokes strong emotions or vivid imagery. - Ask students to write down words or phrases that describe what they see or feel. - Share a few responses with the class and discuss the power of descriptive language.

Introduction (5 minutes): - Explain to students that descriptive writing is a way to paint a picture with words, allowing readers to visualize and experience what is being described. - Discuss the importance of using sensory details (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell) to make writing more engaging and vivid. - Introduce the learning targets and explain how they will be achieved throughout the lesson.

Process with Timing:

Step 1: Elements of Descriptive Writing (10 minutes) - Provide students with a handout or display a slide that outlines the key elements of descriptive writing: vivid vocabulary, sensory details, figurative language, and organization. - Discuss each element briefly, giving examples and encouraging students to share their own ideas. - Distribute a graphic organizer for students to jot down ideas related to each element.

Step 2: First Draft (15 minutes) - Instruct students to choose a topic or setting for their descriptive writing piece. - Encourage them to use the graphic organizer to brainstorm ideas and details for each element. - Set a timer for 10 minutes and have students write their first draft, focusing on incorporating descriptive language and sensory details. - Remind students to use the elements discussed earlier and to write in a logical and organized manner.

Step 3: Peer Review and Revision (10 minutes) - Pair students up and have them exchange their first drafts. - Instruct students to read their partner’s writing and provide constructive feedback using a peer review checklist (provided by the teacher). - Encourage students to suggest improvements, offer praise, and ask clarifying questions. - Give students 5 minutes to revise their first drafts based on the feedback received.

Wrap-up Activity (5 minutes): - Ask a few students to share their revised descriptive writing pieces with the class. - Discuss the improvements made and highlight examples of effective descriptive language and sensory details. - Emphasize the importance of revising and editing in the writing process. - Summarize the key elements of descriptive writing and remind students of the learning targets.

Assessment: - Collect students’ first drafts and revised pieces to assess their understanding and application of descriptive writing techniques. - Use a rubric to evaluate their use of vivid vocabulary, sensory details, figurative language, and organization. - Provide individual feedback to help students further develop their descriptive writing skills.
