Grade 6 Lesson Plan: Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement

Warm-up (10 minutes): - Begin the lesson by asking students to write down three sentences using pronouns. Encourage them to use a variety of pronouns (e.g., he, she, it, they, we, etc.). - After a few minutes, have students share their sentences with a partner or in small groups. - As a class, discuss the sentences and identify the pronouns and their antecedents.

Procedures (60 minutes):

  1. Introduction (5 minutes): - Display the definition of pronoun and antecedent on the board or projector. - Explain that a pronoun takes the place of a noun, and the noun it replaces is called the antecedent. - Give examples of pronouns and their antecedents (e.g., “John is my friend. He is very kind.” - “John” is the antecedent, and “he” is the pronoun).

  2. Number Agreement (15 minutes): - Explain that a pronoun and its antecedent must agree in number. - Provide examples of singular pronouns with singular antecedents and plural pronouns with plural antecedents. - Write sentences on the board and ask students to identify the pronoun and its antecedent, and determine if they agree in number. - Have students practice by completing a worksheet with sentences that require them to choose the correct pronoun based on number agreement.

  3. Person Agreement (15 minutes): - Explain that a pronoun and its antecedent must also agree in person. - Provide examples of first-person pronouns (e.g., I, we) and third-person pronouns (e.g., he, she, they). - Write sentences on the board and ask students to identify the pronoun and its antecedent, and determine if they agree in person. - Have students practice by completing a worksheet with sentences that require them to choose the correct pronoun based on person agreement.

  4. Clear Antecedents (15 minutes): - Explain that every pronoun must have a clear antecedent. - Discuss how problems may arise if a pronoun has more than one possible antecedent. - Write sentences on the board and ask students to identify the pronoun and its possible antecedents, and determine the correct antecedent. - Have students practice by completing a worksheet with sentences that require them to identify the correct antecedent for a given pronoun.

Wrap-up Activity (5 minutes): - Ask students to write down three sentences using pronouns and their antecedents, ensuring that they demonstrate number agreement, person agreement, and clear antecedents. - Collect the sentences and review them to assess students’ understanding of the lesson.

Worksheet Time (30 minutes): - Allocate the remaining time for students to complete the worksheet provided, which includes sentences that require them to apply the concepts of pronoun-antecedent agreement.

Note: The duration of the worksheet time may vary depending on the speed and progress of the students. Adjust the time accordingly to ensure completion.
