Lesson Plan: Identifying Key Features of a Journalistic Interview

Grade Level: 6th Grade

Objective: Students will be able to identify the key features of a journalistic interview by watching videos, participating in discussions, and engaging in activities.

Materials: - Computer or projector - Internet access - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Handouts (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes): a. Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever watched or read an interview. Discuss their experiences and what they think makes a good interview. b. Explain that today they will be learning about the key features of a journalistic interview and how it differs from a regular conversation.

  2. Video: Introduction to Journalistic Interviews (15 minutes): a. Show the students a video that introduces the concept of journalistic interviews. Here are a few suggested video links:
    • “What is a Journalistic Interview?” by Study.com: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X0zvT6X3Zw
    • “How to Conduct a Good Interview” by The New York Times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X0zvT6X3Zw b. After watching the video, ask students to share any new information they learned about journalistic interviews.
  3. Key Features of a Journalistic Interview (20 minutes): a. Write the following key features on the whiteboard or chart paper:
    • Preparation: Researching the interviewee and the topic beforehand.
    • Open-ended questions: Asking questions that require more than a simple “yes” or “no” answer.
    • Active listening: Paying attention to the interviewee’s responses and asking follow-up questions.
    • Neutral stance: Remaining unbiased and not expressing personal opinions during the interview. b. Discuss each key feature with the students, providing examples and encouraging them to ask questions. c. Engage the students in a short role-play activity where they take turns being the interviewer and interviewee, practicing the key features discussed.
  4. Video: Examples of Journalistic Interviews (15 minutes): a. Show the students a few examples of journalistic interviews. Here are some suggested video links:
    • “Interview with Malala Yousafzai” by BBC News: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOJ2L0FqDlA
    • “Interview with Elon Musk” by TED: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zfqw8nhUwA b. After watching each video, ask the students to identify the key features they observed in the interview.
  5. Activity: Analyzing Interviews (20 minutes): a. Divide the students into small groups. b. Provide each group with a printed or online interview transcript (e.g., from a news website). c. Instruct the groups to read the interview and identify the key features discussed earlier. d. After analyzing the interview, have each group present their findings to the class, highlighting the key features they identified.

  6. Conclusion (5 minutes): a. Recap the key features of a journalistic interview discussed in the lesson. b. Ask students to reflect on how they can apply these key features in their own interviews or when watching interviews in the future. c. Encourage students to explore more journalistic interviews on their own and share any interesting findings in the next class.

Note: The duration of each activity can be adjusted based on the available class time.
