Grade 6 Lesson Plan: Creating Advertisements

Learning Objectives: 1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the forms, conventions, and techniques of digital and media texts. 2. Students will consider the impact of digital and media texts on the audience. 3. Students will apply their understanding of digital and media texts when analyzing and creating advertisements. 4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationships between the form, message, and context of texts, the intended audience, and the purpose for production.

Assessment Strategies: - Minds On: Informal assessment through class discussion and questioning. - Action: Formative assessment through observation of students’ participation and engagement in creating advertisements. - Consolidation: Summative assessment through the evaluation of students’ completed advertisements and their ability to explain the choices they made.

Lesson Plan:

  1. Minds On (10 minutes): - Begin the lesson by showing students a few examples of advertisements from different media platforms (TV, print, online). - Engage students in a class discussion about the forms, conventions, and techniques they notice in the advertisements. - Ask questions to prompt their thinking, such as: - What visual elements are used in the advertisements? - How do the advertisements use language to persuade the audience? - What emotions or messages do the advertisements convey? - Assess students’ understanding through their participation in the discussion and their ability to identify key elements of the advertisements.

  2. Action (40 minutes): - Explain to students that they will be creating their own advertisements for a product or service of their choice. - Provide a brief overview of the different elements that make up an effective advertisement, such as a catchy slogan, appealing visuals, and persuasive language. - Divide students into small groups and assign each group a specific product or service. - In their groups, students will brainstorm ideas for their advertisements, considering the intended audience and the purpose for production. - Students will then create a storyboard or outline for their advertisements, including the key elements they plan to include. - Circulate the classroom to provide guidance and support as students work on their advertisements. - Assess students’ understanding during this phase by observing their collaboration, creativity, and application of the forms, conventions, and techniques discussed earlier.

  3. Consolidation (30 minutes): - Give each group time to finalize their advertisements, using digital tools or traditional art supplies. - Once the advertisements are complete, have each group present their work to the class. - During the presentations, ask students to explain the choices they made in terms of the form, message, and context of their advertisements. - Encourage the audience to provide feedback and ask questions about the advertisements. - Assess students’ understanding during this phase by evaluating their completed advertisements and their ability to articulate their choices and reasoning.

  4. Homework (optional): - As an extension activity, students can individually analyze and critique an advertisement they encounter in their daily lives. - They can write a short reflection on the forms, conventions, and techniques used in the advertisement, as well as its impact on the audience.

Note: The assessment strategies mentioned above are just suggestions. Teachers can modify and adapt them based on their classroom context and individual student needs.
