Title: Safety Precautions in the Laboratory
Grade Level: 7
Duration: 60 minutes
Subject: Science
Objective: - Students will understand the importance of safety precautions in the laboratory. - Students will be able to identify and explain common safety precautions in the laboratory. - Students will demonstrate safe behavior in the laboratory.
Materials: - PowerPoint presentation - Laboratory safety rules handout - Safety equipment (lab coats, goggles, gloves) - Laboratory equipment (beakers, test tubes, Bunsen burners, etc.) - Safety posters or visuals
Procedure:
-
Engage (5 minutes): - Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever been in a science laboratory and what they think are some safety precautions they should follow. - Show a short video or present images of laboratory accidents to grab students’ attention and emphasize the importance of safety precautions.
-
Explore (10 minutes): - Introduce the 7Es format and explain that the first “E” stands for Engage. Ask students to brainstorm potential safety hazards they might encounter in a laboratory setting. - Write their responses on the board and discuss each hazard, emphasizing the potential risks and consequences.
-
Explain (15 minutes): - Present a PowerPoint presentation that covers the common safety precautions in the laboratory, including: a. Proper attire (lab coats, closed-toe shoes, tied-back hair) b. Use of safety equipment (goggles, gloves) c. Handling of chemicals (proper labeling, storage, and disposal) d. Proper use of equipment (Bunsen burners, glassware, etc.) e. Fire safety (fire extinguishers, emergency exits) f. Electrical safety (avoiding water near electrical equipment) g. First aid procedures (knowledge of emergency protocols)
-
Elaborate (15 minutes): - Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a laboratory safety rules handout. - In their groups, students should read and discuss the safety rules, highlighting the most important points. - Each group will then create a poster or visual representation of the safety rules they discussed. - Allow time for groups to present their posters and explain the safety rules they focused on.
-
Evaluate (10 minutes): - Conduct a short quiz or discussion to assess students’ understanding of laboratory safety precautions. - Ask questions such as: a. What are the three most important safety precautions in a laboratory? b. How should you handle chemicals in the laboratory? c. What should you do in case of a fire in the laboratory?
-
Extend (5 minutes): - Conclude the lesson by emphasizing the importance of following safety precautions in the laboratory at all times. - Encourage students to apply these safety measures not only in the laboratory but also in their daily lives.
-
Evaluate (5 minutes): - Provide students with a self-assessment sheet where they can reflect on their understanding of laboratory safety precautions and their ability to follow them. - Collect the self-assessment sheets for review and feedback.
Note: Throughout the lesson, ensure that safety equipment and procedures are followed to create a safe learning environment.
