Learning Objectives: 1. Students will be able to identify and differentiate between active and passive voice in sentences. 2. Students will be able to convert sentences from active to passive voice and vice versa. 3. Students will be able to explain the purpose and use of active and passive voice in writing.

Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.1.B - Use intensive pronouns (e.g., myself, ourselves). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.1.C - Recognize and correct inappropriate shifts in verb voice and mood.

Warm-up Activity (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking students to define what they understand by the terms “active voice” and “passive voice.” 2. Write a few sentences on the board, some in active voice and some in passive voice. Ask students to identify which sentences are in active voice and which are in passive voice.

Lesson Development (60 minutes): 1. Introduce the concept of active and passive voice by explaining the difference between the two. 2. Provide examples of sentences in both active and passive voice, and ask students to identify the subject, verb, and object in each sentence. 3. Discuss the formation of passive voice sentences using the verb “be” and a past participle. 4. Engage students in a guided practice activity where they convert active voice sentences to passive voice and vice versa. Provide sentence examples and ask students to work individually or in pairs to make the necessary changes. 5. Review the converted sentences as a class, discussing any challenges or questions that arise.

Wrap-up Activity (20 minutes): 1. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a set of sentences, some in active voice and some in passive voice. 2. Instruct the groups to work together to identify the voice of each sentence and explain their reasoning. 3. Have each group present their findings to the class, discussing any differences in interpretation and clarifying any misconceptions. 4. Conclude the lesson by summarizing the key points about active and passive voice and their importance in writing.

Assessment: Throughout the lesson, assess students’ understanding through their participation in discussions, completion of guided practice activities, and their ability to correctly identify and convert sentences between active and passive voice. Additionally, provide a short written assignment where students are given a paragraph and asked to identify and correct any inappropriate shifts in verb voice and mood.
