Materials: - Whiteboard or blackboard - Markers or chalk - Handouts with sentences for practice - Pencils or pens
Warm-up Activity (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking students to write down three sentences on their own. 2. Instruct them to underline the subject and verb in each sentence. 3. Ask students to share their sentences with a partner and discuss whether the subject and verb agree or not. 4. As a class, discuss a few examples and explain the concept of subject-verb agreement.
Main Lesson (60 minutes): 1. Introduce the rules of subject-verb agreement using examples on the board. a. Singular subjects take singular verbs (e.g., The dog barks). b. Plural subjects take plural verbs (e.g., The dogs bark). c. Indefinite pronouns (e.g., everyone, nobody, each) take singular verbs. d. Compound subjects joined by “and” take plural verbs. e. Subjects joined by “or” or “nor” take a verb that agrees with the closest subject. 2. Provide additional examples for each rule and encourage students to identify the subject and verb in each sentence. 3. Engage students in a guided practice activity where they correct sentences with subject-verb agreement errors. 4. Divide the class into pairs or small groups and distribute handouts with sentences for practice. 5. Instruct students to identify and correct the subject-verb agreement errors in each sentence. 6. Walk around the classroom, providing assistance and feedback as needed. 7. After completing the practice activity, review the answers as a class, discussing the corrections made.
Wrap-up Activity (20 minutes): 1. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. 2. Provide each group with a set of sentence strips, with some sentences having subject-verb agreement errors. 3. Instruct students to work together to identify and correct the errors on the sentence strips. 4. Each group will then present their corrected sentences to the class, explaining the errors and the corrections made. 5. As a class, discuss any common mistakes or challenges encountered during the activity. 6. Conclude the lesson by summarizing the key points of subject-verb agreement and its importance in clear communication.
Assessment: Throughout the lesson, assess students’ understanding of subject-verb agreement by observing their participation in discussions, their ability to identify errors, and the accuracy of their corrections during the practice activities. Additionally, collect and review the completed handouts to assess individual comprehension.
