Lesson Plan: Mental, Emotional, Social, and Physical Wellbeing

Topic: My Feelings Are Important

Grade Level: Second Level (Primary 4-7)

Curriculum Area: Health and Wellbeing

Curriculum Framework: Scottish Curriculum for Excellence

Desired Outcome: I am aware of and able to express my feelings and am developing the ability to talk about them.

Lesson Duration: 60 minutes

Resources: - Whiteboard or flipchart - Markers - Feelings flashcards or pictures - Worksheet: “Expressing My Feelings” - Colored pencils or crayons - Storybook: “The Way I Feel” by Janan Cain (or any other book about emotions)

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking the students how they feel today. Write their responses on the whiteboard or flipchart. 2. Discuss the importance of feelings and emotions. Explain that everyone has different feelings, and it is essential to acknowledge and express them. 3. Introduce the desired outcome: “Today, we will learn about the importance of our feelings and how to express them.”

Body:

Activity 1: Exploring Feelings (15 minutes): 1. Show the feelings flashcards or pictures to the students. 2. Ask the students to identify and name the emotions depicted on the flashcards. 3. Discuss each emotion, asking questions such as: - When do you feel this emotion? - How does it make you feel physically? - Can you think of a time when you felt this way? 4. Encourage students to share their personal experiences related to each emotion.

Activity 2: Expressing My Feelings (20 minutes): 1. Distribute the worksheet: “Expressing My Feelings.” 2. Instruct the students to complete the worksheet by drawing a picture of themselves experiencing different emotions. 3. Encourage them to label each emotion and briefly describe why they felt that way. 4. Circulate the classroom, providing support and guidance as needed.

Activity 3: Storytime - “The Way I Feel” (15 minutes): 1. Read aloud the storybook “The Way I Feel” by Janan Cain or any other book about emotions. 2. Pause at various points in the story to discuss the emotions and feelings experienced by the characters. 3. After reading, facilitate a class discussion: - Which emotions did the characters experience? - How did they express their feelings? - Can you relate to any of the emotions in the story?

Conclusion (5 minutes): 1. Recap the main points discussed during the lesson. 2. Emphasize the importance of acknowledging and expressing our feelings. 3. Encourage students to continue exploring and talking about their emotions with their friends, family, or teachers.

Assessment: - Observe students’ participation and engagement during class discussions and activities. - Review completed worksheets to assess students’ ability to identify and express their feelings accurately.

Extension Activities: 1. Create a feelings journal: Encourage students to write or draw their emotions daily and reflect on them. 2. Role-play scenarios: Divide students into pairs and have them act out different situations where they need to express their feelings. 3. Create a feelings chart: Collaboratively design a classroom chart displaying various emotions and their corresponding expressions.
