Introduction

(5 minutes): Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of CRT (Critical Race Theory) to the children. Explain the theories and how they relate to the modern understanding of race and how it shapes the culture. What are the positive and negative effects of CRT?

Lesson Outline

(20 minutes): Break the students into small groups and provide them with a worksheet that outlines CRT and its effects on culture. Have the students discuss what they are seeing in the worksheet and work together to make their own definitions.

(15 minutes): As a class, watch a video (link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yheq3HfIpw) that outlines the basics of CRT. Ask the students questions throughout the video to ensure that they understand the material.

(15 minutes): Once the videos are complete, have the students create a mind map or diagram that clearly outlines the ways that CRT has impacted culture. They can use the worksheet that they were given to help them figure out the answer.

Questioning

(15 minutes): Have the students use the video and worksheet to answer the following questions:

  1. What are the positive and negative effects of CRT?
  2. How has CRT shaped cultural perception today?
  3. How can we challenge CRT in order to be more inclusive?

Assessment

(10 minutes): Have the students complete a written assessment to ensure that they understand the material. They can either write a short essay or answer a series of multiple-choice questions.

Differentiation

(15 minutes): Allow for individual students to work at their own pace. If a student needs more assistance with understanding the material, provide them with additional worksheets or assign a one-on-one tutor to help them. If a student is able to complete the tasks quickly, allow them to research more advanced topics related to CRT.

Plenary

(5 minutes): Finish the lesson by having the students share the main points of their mind map with the class. Ask the students to identify any real-world examples of CRT that they have seen in recent news or media outlets.
