Lesson Plan: Basic Greetings and Introductions in English

Level: High School English Language Learners

Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to greet and introduce themselves in English using basic phrases and expressions.

Materials: - Whiteboard or blackboard - Markers or chalk - Handouts with greetings and introductions vocabulary - Flashcards with pictures representing greetings and introductions

Warm-up (5 minutes): 1. Greet the students as they enter the classroom individually, using different greetings each time (e.g., “Good morning,” “Hello,” “Hi,” “How are you?”). 2. Ask the students to respond to your greetings using appropriate responses (e.g., “Good morning,” “Hello,” “Hi,” “I’m fine, thank you,” “How are you?”).

Introduction (5 minutes): 1. Write the words “greetings” and “introductions” on the board. 2. Ask the students if they know what these words mean. 3. Explain that greetings are words or phrases used to say hello or welcome someone, while introductions are words or phrases used to introduce oneself or others.

Vocabulary (10 minutes): 1. Distribute handouts with greetings and introductions vocabulary. 2. Go through the vocabulary words together, pronouncing each word and having the students repeat after you. 3. Practice the pronunciation of each word as a class.

Modeling and Practice (15 minutes): 1. Show flashcards with pictures representing different greetings and introductions. 2. Model the pronunciation and usage of each phrase or expression, using the flashcards as prompts. 3. Have the students repeat after you, practicing the pronunciation and intonation. 4. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. 5. Instruct the students to take turns greeting and introducing themselves to their partners using the vocabulary they just learned. 6. Circulate around the classroom, providing assistance and feedback as needed.

Role-Play Activity (15 minutes): 1. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. 2. Provide each group with a scenario or situation (e.g., meeting a new classmate, introducing themselves to a teacher, greeting a visitor). 3. Instruct the students to create a short role-play based on the scenario, incorporating the greetings and introductions vocabulary. 4. Allow the groups time to practice their role-plays. 5. Have each group perform their role-play in front of the class. 6. Encourage the class to provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Wrap-up (5 minutes): 1. Review the greetings and introductions vocabulary as a class. 2. Ask the students to share one thing they learned or found interesting during the lesson. 3. Provide positive reinforcement and praise for their efforts.

Extension Activity (optional): 1. Assign a homework task where students have to create a short video introducing themselves in English. 2. Encourage them to use the greetings and introductions vocabulary learned in class. 3. Have the students share their videos in the next class or upload them to a class website for everyone to watch and comment on.
