Introduction: Hacking can be a fun and exciting way to develop technology skills. It can also be used to help protect people and businesses from malicious hacking practices. In this lesson, students will learn about the basics of ethical hacking, and the responsible use of cyber security practices.
Lesson Outline: 1. Introduction to ethical hacking (defining terms, law, benefits, etc.) 2. Common Hacking Terms (Exploit, Password Cracking, Wifi Hacking) 3. Tools used in hacking (metasploit & kali Linux) 4. Types of attacks (Man in the middle, DDOS etc.) 5. Cyber Security Basics (encryption, firewalls, etc.) 6. Cyber Security Resources (preventative measures, continuing education, etc.)
Questioning: • How can we identify malicious hacks? • How can we use ethical hacking to improve cyber security? • What tools do hackers typically use? • What steps do we take to prevent cyber attacks?
Assessment: At the end of the lesson, students will complete an assessment to test their understanding of ethical hacking and cyber security concepts. The assessment will include multiple choice and short answer questions.
Differentiation: For students who require more challenge, allow them to participate in more interactive activities such as with OpenSource Learning and HackThisSite. For students who may struggle with the concepts, provide extra assistance and focus the lesson more on the basics of ethical hacking and cyber security.
Plenary: At the end of the lesson, have students create a poster using presentation software to summarize the topics that were covered in the lesson.
