Procedure:

  1. Warm-up (5 minutes): - Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what the term “immigration” means. Write their responses on the board. - Introduce the topic by explaining that immigration refers to the process of people moving from one country to another to live permanently. - Show a short video clip (1-2 minutes) that highlights the diversity of immigrants in a particular country. For example, you can use this video: [Video Resource: “Immigration Around the World” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XGAmPRxV48] - After watching the video, ask students to share their thoughts and observations about immigration.

  2. Vocabulary (10 minutes): - Provide students with handouts containing vocabulary words related to immigration (e.g., immigrant, refugee, citizenship, assimilation, etc.). - Ask students to work individually or in pairs to match the vocabulary words with their definitions. - Review the answers as a class, clarifying any doubts or questions.

  3. Language Practice (15 minutes): - Divide the class into pairs or small groups. - Provide each group with a set of discussion questions related to immigration. Here are some examples: a. What are some reasons why people choose to immigrate to another country? b. How do you think immigrants contribute to the culture and economy of their new country? c. What challenges do immigrants face when they move to a new country? d. How can society support and integrate immigrants? - Encourage students to discuss the questions and share their opinions using the vocabulary words they learned.

  4. Video Analysis (15 minutes): - Show a longer video (5-7 minutes) that tells the personal story of an immigrant. Provide them with a worksheet to write their answers. Here is an example of a comprehension question: a. What challenges did the immigrant face when coming to America? - Collect the worksheets and assess students’ understanding of the video.

  5. Differentiation (5 minutes): - For students who need additional support, provide a simplified version of the comprehension questions or allow them to discuss the questions in pairs before writing their answers. - For students who need an extra challenge, ask them to write a short paragraph summarizing the video and expressing their personal thoughts on the topic.

  6. Plenary (5 minutes): - Bring the class back together and ask a few students to share their answers to the comprehension questions or their thoughts on the video. - Summarize the main points discussed during the lesson and emphasize the importance of empathy and respect towards immigrants.

Assessment: - Assess students’ understanding of the vocabulary words through their matching activity. - Assess students’ comprehension of the video through their written answers to the comprehension questions.
