Objective:

By the end of this lesson, intermediate ESL students will be able to read and comprehend a basic text in English, while using grammar and text comprehension strategies.

Materials:

  • Copies of a text passage from the Harry Potter series
  • Grammar worksheets/exercises
  • Blank paper
  • Pencils
  • White board

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes):

-Review fundamentals of grammar and text comprehension for intermediate ESL students. -Discuss passage about Harry Potter and spark interest in the material.

  1. Guided Practice (20 minutes):

-Discuss grammar rules related to the passage about Harry Potter. -Recite sentence with words from the passage and ask students to restate sentence and identify errors with grammar. -Ask students to answer questions about grammar related to the passage.

  1. Independent Practice (20 minutes):

-Distribute copies of the text passage from Harry Potter to each student. -Instruct students to highlight important words/sentences in the passage to aid in comprehension. -Instruct students to complete the grammar worksheets/exercises related to the text passage. -Provide time for students to answer questions and discuss material.

  1. Closure (5 minutes):

-Review the grammar and text comprehension strategies the students used during the lesson. -Review the passage from Harry Potter and ask students to explain the key ideas from the text. -Have students summarise the main points from the lesson.
