Objectives: 1. Students will be able to identify when and where to use the subjunctive in Spanish. 2. Students will be able to construct sentences using the subjunctive in Spanish.

Materials: Handouts

Methodology:

  1. Introduction (10-15 minutes) • Begin by introducing the concept of the subjunctive to the students. Discuss examples of how people express wishes, hopes, or desires in English and how they differ from the indicative form.

  2. Review Conjugations (20-25 minutes) • Have the students use their handouts to practice conjugating verbs in the subjunctive. • Work as a class to review common verb endings for the subjunctive.

  3. Sentence Structure (30 minutes) • Explain the different structures for using the subjunctive in sentences. • Have the students practice using Spanish sentences with the subjunctive by using the handouts. • Have the students work in pairs to practice constructing sentences with the subjunctive.

  4. Quiz (10 minutes) • Assess the students’ understanding of the concepts with a quiz.

Conclusion: Have the students read an example sentence using the subjunctive and have them identify the subject, verb, and adverbial phrase. Then have the students discuss a real-world situation where the subjunctive could be used.
