Lesson Plan: Phonological Awareness - Initial and Final Sound Consonant Tt

Grade Level: Kindergarten Subject: Phonological Awareness Duration: 30-40 minutes

Introduction: - Begin the lesson by gathering the students in a circle and introducing the concept of initial and final sounds. - Show the students a picture of an object that starts with the letter “T” (e.g., turtle) and ask them to identify the initial sound. - Repeat the process with a picture of an object that ends with the letter “T” (e.g., cat) and ask them to identify the final sound. - Explain that today, we will focus on the initial and final sound of the letter “T” and practice identifying words that start or end with this sound.

Lesson Outline:

  1. Warm-up Activity (5 minutes):
    • Play a phonics song or video that focuses on the letter “T” and its sound.
    • Encourage the students to sing along and make the “T” sound whenever they hear it.
  2. Introduction to Initial Sound (10 minutes):
    • Show a picture of an object that starts with the letter “T” (e.g., tree) and ask the students to identify the initial sound.
    • Repeat the process with a few more pictures (e.g., tiger, train, etc.) and have the students practice saying the initial sound.
    • Use questioning techniques to engage the students, such as:
      • “What sound do you hear at the beginning of the word ‘tree’?”
      • “Can you think of any other words that start with the ‘T’ sound?”
  3. Introduction to Final Sound (10 minutes):
    • Show a picture of an object that ends with the letter “T” (e.g., hat) and ask the students to identify the final sound.
    • Repeat the process with a few more pictures (e.g., cat, boat, etc.) and have the students practice saying the final sound.
    • Use questioning techniques to engage the students, such as:
      • “What sound do you hear at the end of the word ‘hat’?”
      • “Can you think of any other words that end with the ‘T’ sound?”
  4. Practice Activity - Sorting Initial and Final Sounds (10 minutes):
    • Provide each student with a worksheet that includes pictures of various objects.
    • Instruct the students to cut out the pictures and sort them into two categories: initial “T” sound and final “T” sound.
    • Circulate the classroom to provide assistance and guidance as needed.

Assessment: - During the practice activity, observe the students’ ability to correctly identify and sort the pictures based on their initial and final sounds. - Use a checklist or anecdotal notes to record their progress and understanding.

Differentiation: - For students who need additional support, provide them with a smaller set of pictures to sort or work in pairs with a peer who can provide assistance. - For students who are ready for a challenge, ask them to come up with their own words that start or end with the “T” sound and write them on the back of their worksheet.

Plenary: - Gather the students back in a circle and review what they have learned about the initial and final sound of the letter “T.” - Play a short video or song related to the letter “T” to reinforce their learning. - Ask the students to share one word that starts or ends with the “T” sound, taking turns around the circle.
