Lesson Plan: Writing and Verbs

Subject: Languages (Scottish Curriculum) Topic: Writing Level: First Level

Desired Outcome: I enjoy creating texts of my choice and I regularly select subject, purpose, format, and resources to suit the needs of my audience.

Focus: Students will be able to recognize and utilize verbs in various contexts to enhance their communication skills.

Lesson Duration: 60 minutes

Resources: - Whiteboard or flipchart - Markers - Worksheets with sentences and missing verbs - Storybooks or short texts with highlighted verbs - Paper and pencils for each student

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about verbs. Write their responses on the whiteboard or flipchart. 2. Explain that verbs are action words that show what someone or something is doing. Give examples of verbs (e.g., run, jump, eat) and ask students to provide more examples. 3. Discuss the importance of verbs in writing and how they help to convey actions and create vivid descriptions.

Main Activities (40 minutes):

Activity 1: Verb Hunt (15 minutes) 1. Provide each student with a worksheet containing sentences with missing verbs. 2. Instruct students to read each sentence and fill in the missing verb from the given options. 3. Encourage students to discuss their answers with a partner before sharing them with the whole class. 4. Review the correct answers as a class, discussing the role of verbs in each sentence.

Activity 2: Creating Action Stories (20 minutes) 1. Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 students. 2. Provide each group with a storybook or a short text with highlighted verbs. 3. Instruct students to work together to create their own action story using the highlighted verbs as inspiration. 4. Encourage students to select a subject, purpose, and format for their story, considering the needs and interests of their audience. 5. Allow students time to plan and write their stories on paper. 6. Once completed, have each group share their stories with the class, emphasizing the verbs they used and how they enhanced their storytelling.

Conclusion (10 minutes): 1. Recap the importance of verbs in writing and how they help to convey actions and create engaging texts. 2. Ask students to reflect on their learning and share one thing they have learned about verbs and their role in writing. 3. Provide positive feedback and praise for their efforts in utilizing verbs effectively in their stories.

Extension Activity (Optional): For students who finish early or require additional challenge: - Ask them to create a comic strip or a short play using verbs to depict actions and dialogue. - Provide them with additional worksheets or online resources to practice identifying and using verbs in different contexts.

Assessment: - Observe students’ participation and engagement during class activities. - Review completed worksheets to assess students’ understanding of verbs in various contexts. - Evaluate students’ stories based on their ability to select appropriate verbs and effectively communicate actions.

Note: Adapt the lesson plan as needed to suit the specific needs and abilities of your students.
