Lesson Plan: Reading and Analyzing Modern Mexican Literature

Desired Outcome: Using what I know about the features of different types of texts, I can find, select, sort, summarize, link, and use information from different sources.

Topic: Modern Mexican Literature

Duration: 2-3 lessons (approximately 60-90 minutes each)

Resources: - A variety of modern Mexican literature texts (short stories, poems, excerpts from novels, etc.) - Access to the internet or library for research - Paper and pencils for note-taking and summarizing

Lesson 1: Introduction to Modern Mexican Literature

Objective: Students will be able to identify the features of modern Mexican literature and understand its significance in Mexican culture.

  1. Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of literature and its importance in different cultures.
  2. Introduce the students to modern Mexican literature and its characteristics, such as magical realism, social and political themes, and cultural diversity.
  3. Show examples of modern Mexican literature texts, such as short stories, poems, or excerpts from novels, and discuss their unique features.
  4. Engage the students in a class discussion about the significance of modern Mexican literature in reflecting Mexican society and culture.
  5. Assign students to research and find one modern Mexican literature text of their choice for the next lesson.

Lesson 2: Analyzing Modern Mexican Literature

Objective: Students will be able to find, select, sort, summarize, link, and use information from different sources related to modern Mexican literature.

  1. Begin the lesson by reviewing the features of modern Mexican literature discussed in the previous lesson.
  2. Ask students to share the texts they found during their research and briefly summarize their chosen text.
  3. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a different modern Mexican literature text.
  4. In their groups, students should read and analyze the assigned text, focusing on its features, themes, and cultural significance.
  5. Ask each group to create a summary of their assigned text, highlighting the main ideas and key elements.
  6. Bring the groups back together and have each group present their findings to the class.
  7. Facilitate a class discussion on the similarities and differences between the texts, and how they reflect Mexican society and culture.
  8. Conclude the lesson by encouraging students to reflect on the importance of understanding different types of texts and using information from various sources.

Extension Activity (Optional):

Objective: Students will be able to create their own modern Mexican literature-inspired piece.

  1. Assign students to write a short story, poem, or create an artwork inspired by the themes and features of modern Mexican literature.
  2. Provide guidance and support as students work on their creative pieces.
  3. Allow students to share their creations with the class, explaining how they incorporated the features of modern Mexican literature into their work.

Assessment:
