Lesson Plan: Writing in Gaelic with a Focus on the Ocean
Desired Outcome: I can use a variety of sources to help me check the accuracy of my Gaelic spelling and punctuation.
Curriculum for Excellence Experiences and Outcomes:
- LIT 1-09a: I can convey information, describe events, explain processes or combine ideas in different ways.
- LIT 1-11a: I can explore and experiment with digital technologies and can use what I learn to support and enhance my learning in different contexts.
- LIT 1-14a: I can use a range of strategies and resources to spell words accurately and use punctuation correctly.
Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin by asking the students if they have ever been to the ocean or seen pictures of it. Ask them to share what they know about the ocean and what they find interesting about it.
- Introduce the topic of writing in Gaelic with a focus on the ocean. Explain that they will be learning how to use a variety of sources to help them check the accuracy of their Gaelic spelling and punctuation.
Main Activity (30 minutes):
- Provide the students with a list of Gaelic words related to the ocean (e.g. tràigh, creagan, sgeir, muir, etc.). Ask them to choose one word and write a short paragraph (3-4 sentences) describing what it means and why it is important.
- Encourage the students to use a Gaelic dictionary or online resource to check the spelling and punctuation of their words. Remind them to use capital letters, full stops, and commas where appropriate.
- Once the students have finished writing their paragraphs, ask them to share their work with the class. Encourage them to listen to each other and provide feedback on the accuracy of their spelling and punctuation.
Extension Activity (20 minutes):
- Provide the students with a selection of images related to the ocean (e.g. waves, fish, boats, etc.). Ask them to choose one image and write a short story (5-6 sentences) about what is happening in the picture.
- Encourage the students to use a Gaelic dictionary or online resource to check the spelling and punctuation of their words. Remind them to use capital letters, full stops, and commas where appropriate.
- Once the students have finished writing their stories, ask them to share their work with the class. Encourage them to listen to each other and provide feedback on the accuracy of their spelling and punctuation.
Conclusion (10 minutes):
- Recap the main points of the lesson, emphasizing the importance of using a variety of sources to help check the accuracy of Gaelic spelling and punctuation.
- Ask the students to reflect on what they have learned and how they can apply it in their future writing.
- Provide feedback on the students’ work and encourage them to continue practicing their Gaelic writing skills.
