Lesson Plan: Listening and Talking - Welcoming Traditions

Grade Level: Third Level (Scottish Curriculum)

Desired Outcome: I regularly select and listen to or watch texts for enjoyment and interest, and I can express how well they meet my needs and expectations. I can give reasons, with evidence, for my personal response.

Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Select and listen to texts related to welcoming traditions. 2. Express their personal response to the texts, including how well they meet their needs and expectations. 3. Provide reasons and evidence to support their personal response.

Materials: 1. Audio or video recordings of different welcoming traditions from around the world. 2. Worksheets with guiding questions for personal response and evidence gathering. 3. Chart paper and markers.

Procedure:

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by discussing the concept of welcoming traditions. Ask students if they have ever experienced or witnessed any welcoming traditions in their own lives. 2. Show a short video clip or play an audio recording of a welcoming tradition from a different culture. Ask students to pay attention to the sounds, words, and actions they observe.

Listening and Watching (20 minutes): 1. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a different audio or video recording of a welcoming tradition. 2. Instruct students to listen or watch the recording carefully, paying attention to the details and emotions conveyed. 3. Provide worksheets with guiding questions for students to complete individually or in their groups. Questions may include: - What did you find interesting or enjoyable about the welcoming tradition? - How well did the text meet your needs and expectations? Why? - Did the text evoke any emotions or feelings? If yes, describe them. - Did the text remind you of any similar traditions or experiences? - What evidence from the text supports your personal response?

Discussion and Reflection (15 minutes): 1. Bring the class back together and facilitate a discussion based on the students’ responses to the guiding questions. 2. Ask students to share their personal responses and reasons for their opinions, using evidence from the texts. 3. Encourage students to listen actively to their peers and ask follow-up questions to deepen the discussion.

Extension Activity (10 minutes): 1. Provide chart paper and markers. 2. Ask students to brainstorm and list different welcoming traditions they would like to learn more about. 3. Display the chart paper in the classroom as a visual reminder of the students’ interests and curiosity.

Conclusion (5 minutes): 1. Summarize the main points discussed during the lesson. 2. Emphasize the importance of actively selecting and listening to texts for enjoyment and interest. 3. Encourage students to continue exploring different welcoming traditions on their own.

Assessment: Assessment can be conducted through observation of students’ active participation in the discussion and their ability to provide reasons and evidence to support their personal response. Additionally, the completed worksheets can be collected and reviewed for individual understanding and engagement.
