Lesson Plan: Listening and Talking - Delivering a Brief Presentation

Subject: Languages (Scottish Curriculum) Level: Second Level

Desired Outcome: I can deliver a brief presentation on a familiar topic using familiar language and phrases.

Focus: Developing listening and speaking skills through delivering a brief presentation.

Lesson Duration: 60 minutes

Resources: - Whiteboard or flipchart - Markers - Presentation topic cards (prepared in advance) - Timer or stopwatch - Peer evaluation sheets (optional)

Introduction (5 minutes): 1. Greet the students and explain the objective of the lesson: to develop their listening and speaking skills by delivering a brief presentation. 2. Discuss the importance of effective communication and public speaking skills in various aspects of life. 3. Share the desired outcome: “By the end of this lesson, you will be able to deliver a brief presentation on a familiar topic using familiar language and phrases.”

Warm-up Activity (10 minutes): 1. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. 2. Provide each group with a set of presentation topic cards. 3. Instruct the students to take turns selecting a card and discussing the topic with their partner/group for 2 minutes. 4. Encourage active listening and note-taking during the discussions.

Main Activity - Presentation Preparation (20 minutes): 1. Explain that each student will prepare a brief presentation on a familiar topic of their choice. 2. Distribute a presentation planning sheet to each student. 3. Instruct the students to choose a topic and brainstorm key points and supporting details. 4. Encourage them to use familiar language and phrases while preparing their presentations. 5. Circulate the classroom, providing guidance and support as needed.

Presentation Delivery (20 minutes): 1. Randomly select students to deliver their presentations. 2. Each student should have 2-3 minutes to present their topic. 3. Encourage the use of visual aids (if available) to enhance their presentations. 4. Remind the audience to actively listen and take notes during each presentation. 5. After each presentation, allow time for questions or comments from the audience.

Peer Evaluation (optional) (10 minutes): 1. Distribute peer evaluation sheets to each student. 2. Instruct the students to provide constructive feedback to their peers based on the criteria provided. 3. Encourage students to focus on strengths and areas for improvement. 4. Collect the evaluation sheets and provide them to the presenters for reflection.

Conclusion (5 minutes): 1. Recap the main points covered in the lesson. 2. Emphasize the importance of effective communication skills and the progress made by the students. 3. Encourage students to continue practicing their presentation skills in various contexts. 4. Provide positive feedback and praise for their efforts.
