  • Compare and contrast different types of text

Focus: Essay Writing

Introduction (10 minutes)

  • The teacher will introduce the topic of reading and essay writing to the students.
  • The teacher will explain the desired outcome of the lesson and what the students will be able to do by the end of the lesson.
  • The teacher will ask the students if they have any prior knowledge of essay writing and what they know about it.

Main Activity (40 minutes)

  • The teacher will provide the students with a text to read. The text should be appropriate for the fourth level and should be challenging enough to allow the students to practice their reading skills.
  • The teacher will ask the students to read the text and identify the purpose, main concerns, concepts or arguments, and supporting details.
  • The teacher will ask the students to make inferences from key statements and state these accurately in their own words.
  • The teacher will ask the students to compare and contrast the text with another text they have read before.
  • The teacher will provide the students with a prompt for an essay and ask them to write an essay based on the text they have read. The prompt should be related to the purpose, main concerns, concepts or arguments, and supporting details of the text.
  • The teacher will provide the students with a rubric for the essay and explain the criteria for grading.

Conclusion (10 minutes)

  • The teacher will ask the students to share their essays with the class.
  • The teacher will provide feedback to the students on their essays and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each essay.
  • The teacher will summarize the main points of the lesson and ask the students if they have any questions or concerns.

Assessment

  • The teacher will assess the students based on their ability to clearly state the purpose, main concerns, concepts or arguments, and use supporting detail, make inferences from key statements and state these accurately in their own words, and compare and contrast different types of text.
  • The teacher will assess the students’ essays based on the rubric provided.
