Lesson Plan: Listening and Talking in German with the Focus of Gesundes Leben

Desired Outcome: I can listen and respond to others, including sympathetic fluent speakers of the language, in extended conversations that are less predictable.

Level: Fourth Level

Time: 60 minutes

Resources:

  • Gesundes Leben vocabulary list
  • Audio recording of a conversation about healthy living
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout with conversation questions

Introduction (10 minutes):

  1. Greet the students in German and ask them how they are feeling today.
  2. Introduce the topic of Gesundes Leben (healthy living) and ask the students what they think it means.
  3. Write the vocabulary words for Gesundes Leben on the whiteboard and ask the students to repeat them after you.

Main Activity (40 minutes):

  1. Play the audio recording of a conversation about healthy living.
  2. Ask the students to listen carefully and take notes on what they hear.
  3. After the recording is finished, ask the students to work in pairs and discuss what they heard.
  4. Give each pair a handout with conversation questions related to Gesundes Leben.
  5. Ask the students to use their notes and the vocabulary list to answer the questions and have a conversation with their partner.
  6. Circulate around the room and listen to the students’ conversations, providing feedback and assistance as needed.

Closure (10 minutes):

  1. Ask the students to share one thing they learned about Gesundes Leben from their conversation with their partner.
  2. Review the vocabulary words for Gesundes Leben and ask the students to repeat them again.
  3. Thank the students for their participation and encourage them to continue practicing their listening and speaking skills in German.

Assessment:

The students will be assessed on their ability to listen and respond to others in extended conversations that are less predictable. The teacher will observe the students’ conversations and provide feedback on their use of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. The teacher will also assess the students’ ability to answer the conversation questions and demonstrate their understanding of Gesundes Leben.
