Introduction (5 mins) Welcome the students to the lesson and explain to them what today’s discussion is about. Introduce the concept of Roman Law and its importance in the formation of today’s legal systems. Emphasize the importance of legal systems throughout history and explain why it is important to study Roman Law.

Lesson Outline (45 mins) 1. Briefly explain the development of Roman Law, with the origins in the Twelve Tables of the Roman Republic, the development of the Justinian Code by emperor Justinian and the subsequent spread of the Justinian Code throughout Europe.

1. Discuss the impact of Roman Law on today’s legal systems. Ask the students to use the Internet to research modern laws that were derived from Roman Law.

4. Assign the students the task of researching the legal codes of the time and to debate the importance of Roman Law in today’s society.

Questioning (10 mins) Throughout the lesson, ask open ended questions to assess whether the students understand the material being discussed. Use the Socratic method to engage everybody in the discussion and challenge each student’s opinion.

Assessment (10 mins) Assess the students’ knowledge by asking them to write a reflection on the two videos and the worksheet activities. Ask them to consider the application and influence of Roman Law today and the importance it has had on other legal systems.

Differentiation Differentiate the lesson for students who require more support by providing additional resources for their relevant learning styles. For visual learners, provide images and diagrams; for auditory learners provide audio files; and for kinesthetic learners, ask them to create a timeline to demonstrate the development of Roman Law.

Plenary Close the lesson by summarizing the key points discussed in the lesson and asking the students to explain the significance of Roman Law to the formation of today’s legal system. Ask the students to name at least three laws or principles derived from Roman Law.
