Introduction:
Good morning, students! Today’s lesson will be focused on women’s rights in history. We will be exploring the advances in women’s rights, particularly through the 20th century, and discussing the important role women have played in the civil rights movements. This is an important topic, as it is integral to understanding the progress we have made in civil rights and controversies still being debated today.
Lesson Outline:
I. Introduction/Overview a. Definition of women’s rights b. Placing the topic in a historical context
II. Women’s Rights Movement of the 19th and Early 20th Century a. Suffrage record b. Reform Movements
III. The Feminist Movements of the 20th and 21st Century a. Women’s rights activism b. Contributions to modern society
Questioning:
- What does “women’s rights” mean?
- Why did it take so long for women to receive the right to vote?
- What were some of the reforms that improved the rights of women?
- How have the modern feminist movements impacted civil rights?
Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, students will create a timeline highlighting key moments in the women’s rights movement up until the present day. They will include a description of each event, their significance and an image which reflects the event.
Differentiation:
For students who require more assistance with writing, they can be given a worksheet which guides them through the process. For students who may find the topic more engaging, they can create a presentation, either as an oral presentation or multimedia presentation, which summarizes the lesson and examines the key events.
Plenary:
To wrap up the lesson, students will review the timeline they created and discuss any questions or insights they made about the history of women’s rights. As a final act, students can each make a pledge to support one form of women’s rights advocacy.
