Lesson Plan: Information Handling - Analysis of Likelihood

Subject: Mathematics

Level: First Level

Topic: Information Handling

Desired Outcome: I can use appropriate vocabulary to describe the likelihood of events occurring, using the knowledge and experiences of myself and others to guide me.

Focus: Analysis

Curriculum Links:

  • I can sort information into simple tables and diagrams, including bar charts and pictograms, and explain my findings (MNU 1-20a)
  • I can use my knowledge of the probability of an event to make predictions and decisions, using ICT where appropriate (MNU 1-23a)

Resources:

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Worksheets with tables and diagrams
  • Dice
  • Playing cards
  • ICT tools (optional)

Introduction (10 minutes):

  • Begin the lesson by asking the students if they have ever made predictions about something happening or not happening.
  • Ask them to share their experiences and how they made their predictions.
  • Introduce the concept of likelihood and explain that it is a way of describing how likely or unlikely something is to happen.
  • Write the following vocabulary words on the board: certain, likely, unlikely, and impossible.
  • Explain the meaning of each word and give examples of situations where they might be used.

Main Activity (30 minutes):

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a worksheet with a table or diagram.
  • Ask the students to sort the information in the table or diagram and use appropriate vocabulary to describe the likelihood of events occurring.
  • Circulate around the room and provide support and guidance as needed.
  • Once the groups have completed their worksheets, ask them to share their findings with the class.
  • Use the whiteboard to create a class chart or diagram to summarize the findings.

Extension Activity (20 minutes):

  • Provide each group with a dice or a deck of playing cards.
  • Ask them to make predictions about the likelihood of certain outcomes and record their predictions on a table or diagram.
  • Have the students roll the dice or draw cards and record the actual outcomes.
  • Ask the students to compare their predictions with the actual outcomes and discuss any differences.
  • Encourage the students to reflect on their predictions and identify any patterns or trends.

Conclusion (10 minutes):

  • Recap the lesson by asking the students to share what they have learned about likelihood and how they can use it to make predictions and decisions.
  • Ask the students to reflect on how they can apply this knowledge in their everyday lives.
  • Provide feedback and praise for their efforts and participation.

Assessment:

  • Observe the students during the main activity and extension activity to assess their ability to use appropriate vocabulary to describe the likelihood of events occurring.
  • Review the completed worksheets and tables/diagrams to assess their understanding of the concept of likelihood.
  • Provide feedback and praise for their efforts and participation.
