Lesson Plan: Information Handling - Probability

Subject: Mathematics Topic: Information Handling - Probability Level: Second Level (Scottish Curriculum)

Desired Outcome: I can conduct simple experiments involving chance and communicate my predictions and findings using the vocabulary of probability.

Focus: Alunos (students)

Lesson Duration: 60 minutes

Resources: - Whiteboard or blackboard - Markers or chalk - Dice - Coin - Probability vocabulary cards (prepared in advance) - Probability worksheet (prepared in advance) - Pencils or pens

Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking the students if they have ever played games that involve chance, such as rolling a dice or flipping a coin. 2. Discuss with the students what they understand by the term “probability” and ask for examples of events that have different probabilities (e.g., the probability of getting heads or tails when flipping a coin). 3. Explain that in this lesson, they will be conducting simple experiments involving chance and using the vocabulary of probability to communicate their predictions and findings.

Main Activities (40 minutes):

Activity 1: Vocabulary Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Display the probability vocabulary cards on the board. 2. Go through each vocabulary word (e.g., certain, likely, unlikely, impossible) and ask the students to provide definitions or examples. 3. Discuss the meaning of each word and ensure that the students understand the vocabulary.

Activity 2: Experiment with a Coin (15 minutes): 1. Give each student a coin and ask them to predict whether it will land on heads or tails when flipped. 2. Have the students record their predictions on the probability worksheet. 3. Ask the students to flip their coins and record the actual outcomes. 4. Discuss the results as a class, asking students to share their findings and compare them to their predictions. 5. Introduce the concept of expressing probability as a fraction or a percentage (e.g., 1/2 or 50%).

Activity 3: Experiment with a Dice (15 minutes): 1. Give each student a dice and ask them to predict which number it will land on when rolled. 2. Have the students record their predictions on the probability worksheet. 3. Ask the students to roll their dice and record the actual outcomes. 4. Discuss the results as a class, asking students to share their findings and compare them to their predictions. 5. Introduce the concept of expressing probability as a fraction or a percentage (e.g., 1/6 or 16.67%).

Conclusion (10 minutes): 1. Review the vocabulary of probability with the students, asking them to provide examples using the words learned. 2. Discuss the importance of conducting experiments and recording data to understand probability. 3. Assign the probability worksheet as homework, asking students to complete any remaining questions.

Assessment: - Observe students’ participation and engagement during class activities. - Review completed probability worksheets to assess students’ understanding of the vocabulary and ability to conduct experiments involving chance. - Provide feedback and support as needed.

Extension Activities: - Encourage students to conduct additional experiments involving chance at home and record their findings. - Introduce more complex probability concepts, such as calculating the probability of multiple events occurring together. - Explore real-life examples of probability, such as weather forecasts or sports predictions.
