Introduction

Welcome students to the lesson on biochemistry. Today we will be exploring the core concepts in biochemistry and the underlying principles that underpin this complex field. This is an important topic because biochemistry is a fundamental aspect of understanding the structure and function of the body in health and disease.

Before we begin, let’s revisit what biochemistry is and why it is important in medicine. Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes within and related to cells, including their structure and function. It is the foundation of understanding the building blocks of life and how they interact. It covers fields such as genetics, enzyme kinetics, metabolism, protein structure, and metabolic control.

Lesson Outline

  1. Exploring The Major Classes of Biomolecules
  2. Carbohydrates
  3. Lipids
  4. Proteins
  5. Enzymes
  6. Metabolism

Questioning:

During the lesson, pose questions and check for understanding, allowing students sufficient time to process and answer. Make sure to draw connections to clinical practice. Examples:

• How do the major classes of biomolecules differ from each other? • Name 2 functions of proteins • What is the purpose of enzymes in metabolic pathways?

Assessment

Assess students’ understanding of the material by providing a short quiz or group activity. Provide a worksheet or video resources for students to review and answer different questions related to the topics covered in the lesson (links provided).

Differentiation:

Differentiate instruction as appropriate for students with different learning styles and levels.

• For visual learners, draw diagrams to explain the structures of biopolymers molecules and how they function. • Provide opportunities for kinesthetic learners to do simple experiments with enzymes and pH. • Provide extra support to those who require it while challenging the high-achievers.

Plenary

Encourage students to summarize what they have learnt today and make connections to clinical practice. Discuss how biochemistry informs different aspects of medicine.
