Introduction: Today we will be discussing colour in painting. We will be engaging with many well-known works of art by artists such as Rembrandt, Claude Monet and Édouard Manet.

Lesson Outline 1. Class discussion about the use of colour in painting. 2. Viewing Example Paintings – Showing 3-4 different paintings and identifying their artist and discussing the differences between their use of colour. 3. Virtual Gallery tour – Explore images of the National Galleries of Scotland website and discuss the artists and different colours (https://www.nationalgalleries.org/collections/galleries/genre/landscape). 4. Group discussion about the importance of colour in painting. 5. Individual activities – completing worksheets to identify the artist of each painting and identify the primary and secondary colours used.

Questions • What is the title of this painting? • Who is the artist? • How could this painting be used to create moods or feelings? • Why is colour used in paintings? • What techniques were used to create this painting? • What type of painting is this? • What other colours do you notice in the painting?

Assessment The pupils will be assessed informally throughout the process. The group and individual activities at the end of the lesson will be assessed, and marks given according to how they demonstrate an understanding of colour, techniques and the artists.

Differentiation To accommodate all levels, there is a range of worksheets and resources, from more basic beginning sheets with only one colour to more complex worksheets with a range of colours. For those with additional support needs or learning difficulties, the worksheet will be adapted and simplified.

Plenary At the end of the lesson, ask the class to discuss what they have learned about colour in painting. Ask them to list some facts or artists they have discussed, and if they can relate it to any other topics or areas of knowledge.
