Objective: At the end of the lesson, research professionals will be able to understand and utilize data-driven communications, data journalism and impactful writing to communicate their work to the public.

Materials Needed: access to video and worksheet

Timeline:

• 10 minutes: Introduce the topics of data-driven communications, data journalism, and impactful writing. • 15 minutes: Discussion on what data-driven communication, data journalism, and impactful writing are and how they can be used to communicate research to the public. • 15 minutes: Introduction of tools and online resources for researching and collecting data from various sources (e.g. government data, news sites, etc.). • 10 minutes: Tutorial on how to use data analysis tools and visualize data in a meaningful way. • 10 minutes: Introduction to data storytelling and writing a data narrative. • 10 minutes: Introduction to the concept of impactful writing, including how to create an attention-grabbing headline, writing compelling stories, and using data to support claims. • 10 minutes: Review and Q&A.
