Title: Parts of Speech in English
Grade Level: 4th-6th
Objective: Students will be able to identify and use the eight parts of speech in English.
Materials: - Whiteboard and markers - Handouts with sentences for students to identify parts of speech - Chart with definitions and examples of each part of speech
Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin by asking students if they know what parts of speech are. 2. Explain that parts of speech are the building blocks of sentences and that there are eight different parts of speech in English. 3. Show the chart with definitions and examples of each part of speech. 4. Ask students to repeat the names of the eight parts of speech.
Direct Instruction (20 minutes): 1. Choose one part of speech to focus on (e.g. nouns). 2. Explain the definition and give examples of nouns. 3. Write a sentence on the board and ask students to identify the nouns in the sentence. 4. Repeat this process for each of the eight parts of speech.
Guided Practice (20 minutes): 1. Hand out the sentences for students to identify the parts of speech. 2. Have students work in pairs to identify the parts of speech in each sentence. 3. Walk around the room to provide assistance and answer any questions.
Independent Practice (20 minutes): 1. Have students write their own sentences using each of the eight parts of speech. 2. Collect the sentences and check for understanding.
Closure (10 minutes): 1. Review the eight parts of speech with the class. 2. Ask students to share one thing they learned about parts of speech today. 3. End the lesson by reminding students that understanding parts of speech is important for writing and speaking correctly in English.
Assessment: - Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and use the eight parts of speech in English through their participation in guided and independent practice.
