Introduction

Introduce the topic of proper nouns in an engaging manner. Ask students if they can name any proper nouns, e.g. names of countries or cities, people or characters etc. Explain that proper nouns name specific things, places and people and begin with a capital letter.

Lesson Outline

Explain that proper nouns can be very varied and it is important to understand how to use them correctly. Give examples of their specific use, e.g. titles, organizations, specific places. Discuss the importance of punctuation with proper nouns, e.g. the use of apostrophes.

Introduce the concept of collective nouns such as a class of students, a group of friends. Explain the various types of proper nouns, such as proper nouns for geographical features. Show a PowerPoint presentation of examples of proper nouns in everyday use.

Questioning

Engage students in the lesson plan by asking questions. Have students work in small groups to identify proper nouns in common proverbs, song lyrics or familiar books. Ask questions such as what type of proper noun is this? or why do we use a capital letter for this proper noun?

Assessment

Assess student understanding through an online formative assessment. Provide a worksheet to help students identify and punctuate proper nouns in sentences.

Differentiation

Provide differentiated activities to cater to different students learning needs, such as using a picture to label proper nouns, writing a story with proper nouns or sorting sentences with proper nouns.

Plenary

For the plenary quiz students on the various types of proper nouns, group words into categories and ask the students to explain when the use of a capital letter is necessary.
