Introduction

To begin the lesson, introduce the concept of proper nouns and discuss why it is important for children to understand proper nouns. You can also use a short video or an example to explain the definition of proper nouns (person, place, or thing).

Lesson Outline

Firstly, provide the children with an opportunity to create a list of examples of proper nouns by brainstorming. To get them started, you could use examples such as tables and chairs, names of people and places, days of the week and so on.

Secondly, provide a sheet of paper with a blank map of the United States and ask the children to fill it with proper nouns they are familiar with.

Thirdly, have the children complete a worksheet to identify, underline, and capitalize the proper nouns in a given sentence.

Fourthly, have the children match names of people, places, and things with their appropriate titles (Mr. Mrs. Dr. etc.)

Fifthly, provide the children an opportunity to use the proper nouns they have learned in a writing activity.

Questioning

Throughout the lesson, use questions to ensure that the children understand the concepts being taught. For example, you could ask the children to explain how to identify a proper noun or provide examples of proper nouns they are familiar with.

Assessment

To assess the children’s understanding of the concepts covered in the lesson, you could provide a quiz or a worksheet to assess their comprehension of the lesson.

Differentiation

To differentiate the lesson, provide worksheets or activities for lower and higher ability groups or provide extra help or resources to those who need assistance during the lesson.

Plenary

To conclude the lesson, discuss the importance of using proper nouns when writing. You could also recap the lesson and provide an opportunity for the children to ask questions.
