Introduction:

“Good morning students! Today we are going to learn a new English language concept called proper nouns. Proper nouns are special kinds of nouns that refer to particular people, places, and things. Let’s get started!”

Lesson Outline:

  1. First, explain what a proper noun is. Provide examples and have students identify parts of the example that identify it as a proper noun (e.g. the words London, Mary).

  2. Next, explain the difference between common and proper nouns, providing lots of examples. Use visuals such as pictures and videos to help explain the concept (e.g. this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=runEE1YA-L4).

  3. Have students complete a worksheet on proper nouns (e.g. this one: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-l-5251-proper-nouns-worksheets). Ask students to identify proper nouns or identify which words in a sentence are proper nouns.

  4. Allow students to work in pairs or teams to create sentences that include proper nouns.

  5. Give students a practice quiz to evaluate their understanding of the concept (e.g. this worksheet: https://www.artskills.tenthmatrix.co.uk/thought-provoking-grammar-worksheets-proper-nouns-worksheet.pdf).

Questioning:

As you proceed through the lesson, pose open-ended questions to your students such as:

  1. What is a proper noun?

  2. Can you provide an example of a proper noun?

  3. How does a proper noun differ from a common noun?

  4. Can you tell me a sentence that contains a proper noun?

  5. What other words usually come with a proper noun?

Assessment:

Assess your students’ understanding of the concept by having them take a quiz or complete a worksheet. This will help you gauge how deeply students have grasped the material and how much further instruction may be necessary.

Differentiation:

Ensure that all students are able to understand the material by providing different types of materials (e.g. visual aids, printed worksheets, online quizzes, etc.) and by allowing students to work in pairs or teams. Additionally, provide multiple levels of difficulty in practice activities to enable students of all levels to find success.

Plenary:

To wrap up the lesson, review the key concepts students have learned by posing questions such as:

  1. What are the characteristics of a proper noun?

  2. How is a proper noun different than a common noun?

  3. What words often accompany a proper noun?
